Hawks Schooling Community

Group Sets Up Nest in School

BRONX, NEW YORK, OCTOBER 2- On a day when the DeWitt Clinton's varsity football team returned for their annual homecoming game-- a family of wild hawks were already home and on the prowl as they have called Clinton High School their home for the last five or six years.
Able to dive and sail through the air at top speeds of up to 100 miles-per-hour and sounding like a model plane's wind-up propeller, this family of hawks have been buzzing up and down Mosholu Parkway causing quite a stir.
Several school safety officers were recently spotted snapping pictures of a trio of hawks who are believed to be a part of a family of as many as six, who have reportedly set up camp in an abandon tower atop the iconic school, that first opened on Mosholu Parkway back in 1929.
One hawk was spotted atop the school as three others played tag, danced and posed for photos shot by school safety agents and a handful of passersby with cell-phone cameras, all while the feathered creatures looked for prey, reportedly dining on a menu of rats and pigeons and an occasional squirrel.
Hawks apparently find the borough of the Bronx an ideal location as nests of hawks have been spotted in Highbridge Park, Pelham Bay, Fordham University, The New York Botanical Gardens and at least one fire escape along Mosholu Parkway.
Clinton's new residents appear to be from the Broad-winged Hawk family, whose numbers have declined in recent years.
One longtime school safety officer recalled, "We had a rodent problem at the school and they quickly took care of that." The official added, "I'd like to see the city dedicate some resources for them, like they did for the hawks along Fifth Avenue."
Hawks are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and currently have a global population estimated at 2 million.
When reached by telephone, the school's principal said that while the hawks have been appreciated by the faculty and students for the past several years, The Governors would remain the school's mascot.
Principal Geraldine Ambrosio stressed, "No... long live The Governors."
But the Clinton Hawks does have a nice ring to it.

Foot Freak Charged in Sniffs, Choking Women

By David Greene

BRONX, NEW YORK, OCTOBER 1- Police have announced the arrest of a suspect wanted in connection with three attacks on women, including one attack where he removed the victim's shoes and smelled her feet.

Cops say University Avenue resident Calvin Presinal, 28, approached his victims from behind and choked them until they passed out.

Presinal reportedly approached his first victim at 12:10 a.m. on August 5, when a 21-year-old woman was attacked at W. Kingsbridge Road and Jerome Avenue.

Investigators have also charged Presinal with two additional attacks that took place on August 30. Police say the second victim was approached at the intersection of Sedgwick Avenue and Bailey Avenue at 1:10 a.m.

In that incident Presinal reportedly removed the shoes of his 18-year-old victim and sniffed her feet before running off.

Less than a half hour, police say Presinal struck again along Parkview Terrace in Bedford Park, when he approached a 24-year-old woman whom he allegedly choked and wrestled to the ground.

The victim reportedly fought back as the suspect attempted to undress her.

Presinal was arrested on Friday, September 6, and charged with three counts of assault, three counts of strangulation and attempted rape.

Police continue to hunt for a second individual who is being sought in connection with the August 21 attempted sexual assault of a 20-year old Fordham University student, who was attacked inside her off-campus building.

100 PERCENT
By Robert Press
BRONX, NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 26- The Kingsbridge National Ice Center (KNIC) at the Kingsbridge Armory has cleared the first two hurdles in the land use process know as ULERP.
Community Board 7 held a public hearing last week, and then voted 20 – 5 to approve the KNIC proposal of nine ice skating rinks and a community benefits package of $1.7 Billion. The next hurdle in the ULERP process was a public hearing by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. last Friday. BP Diaz having come out in favor of the KNIC proposal early on has now passed it to the City Planning Department. CPC has up to 60 days to either approve or disapprove the armory proposal. One would have to bet since this is a “Pet Project” of outgoing Mayor Bloomberg that CPC should not waste any time in approving the KNIC proposal. The last stop of the ULERP process is a hearing before the full City Council which votes to approve or not. The original Shops at the Armory proposal two years ago was vetoed by the City Council, and led to the fierce battle over “The Living Wage Bill”.
At both hearings local City Councilman Fernando Cabrera was not present and did not have anyone to represent him either. It is said that Councilman Cabrera is not totally in agreement with the community benefits agreement that was agreed upon, but we will have to see if Cabrera is silent when the KNIC proposal come before the City Council. It is believed that while this ULERP process could drag out into the new year under a new mayor and city council that many from Mayor Bloomberg down want this ULERP process to be finished before Mayor Bloomberg leaves office. You can go to my blog at www.100percent.blogspot.com to read more on the public hearings, see photos of New York Ranger great Mark Messier (CEO of the KNIC) as he testifies at Bronx Borough Hall, and even a photo of the Community Benefits agreement.
Last Friday was the annual Bronx Democratic County Judicial Convention. What is usually a ho-hum boring meeting was filled with excitement as Democratic Mayoral candidate Bill deBlasio showed up before the meeting to rally the Bronx troops in his support. The Bronx Democratic organization had supported Bill Thompson in the Democratic primary, but now it was full steam ahead for Bill deBlasio. To my question about former Bronx BP Adolfo Carrion stealing Democratic votes away here in the Bronx as the candidate of the Independence Party, there was a rush to the podium as current Bronx BP Ruben Diaz Jr. got to it first. Diaz said 'Carrion is no longer a Democrat, and that he has turned his back on the Democratic Party”. Diaz added that the Bronx Democratic County organization will take care of things in the Bronx, to which Bronx Democratic County Leader Carl Heastie agreed.
In the first mayoral poll after the primary Democrat Bill deBlasio leads Republican Joe Lhota by 43 percent. It was about 65 percent for deBlasio and 22 percent for Lhota, with 3 percent for Carrion, and about 10 percent undecided. By the way, the four judges that were nominated were Justice Laura Douglas, Judge Norma Ruiz, Judge Larry Schachner, and Judge Julia Rodriguez to fill the four upcoming vacancies.
Don't forget that Tuesday October 1st is Primary Run Off Day between the two top finishers in the Democratic Public Advocate race Brooklyn State Senator Dan Squadron and Brooklyn Councilwoman Letitia James. My prediction - Squadron wins 61 percent - 39 percent.
In the 86th A.D. special election, candidate Victor Pichardo has increased his lead to 104 votes after the re-canvassing of the voter machines. There are still many paper ballots that have to be counted, but it looks like Mr. Pichardo will be the new Assemblyman from the 86th Assembly District.
Don't forget to check my blog for events that took place over the past weekend such as the Jerome-Gun Hill BID Street Festival that took place last Saturday. Also check for upcoming events such as Fordham Fever Friday's. On Friday October 4th the Fordham BID will present an “International Day Fair” from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Muller Park & Plaza located on Fordham Road by Creston Avenue.

Summer’s Over But Bullets Still Flying

Residents on Edge as Bloody Mayhem Continues
By David Greene
BRONX, NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 4- The NYPD's own statistics show that the city is on pace to have the lowest murder rate in the last 50 years, but that offers little comfort to family members of those killed or wounded by the almost daily, random street violence.
Detectives are still hunting the gunman who shot and killed Raymond Hernandez, 22, who was shot in the hallway of 2860 Grand Concourse on July 15.
On August 3, officers from the 46th Precinct reported a person shot and killed at 2377 Creston Avenue. Police were looking for two black males seen fleeing the scene.
Kahleed Adams had returned to the ruff and tumble streets of Fordham Heights where he was shot in the buttocks a week earlier. At 12:30 a.m. on August 19, he was approached by a group of men at E. 184 Street and Morris Avenue, when someone opened fire, striking Adams in the head.
Despite being in full view of an NYPD surveillance camera, installed after Adams was shot the first time, detectives continue to hunt for the young man's killer.
But the most blood-spilling, effecting the most people are the random acts of violence that often go unreported. Information can now be found on social media websites as the community seems to be trying to keep itself informed, but rumors continue to be almost as big a problem as the violence itself.
Officers from the 52nd Precinct responded to calls of a person stabbed at 12:10 a.m. on August 3. The victim was reportedly stabbed at the intersection of Morris Avenue and E. Kingsbridge Road. Police were looking for a black male wearing a white and gray shirt and dark jeans.
At 7 p.m. on August 4, a livery taxi driver was stabbed in the chest an neck as he sat behind the wheel at Bainbridge Avenue and E. Fordham Road. An unidentified resident of the block reportedly tossed a large rock at the car, causing the suspect to flee the stolen car.
Police reportedly discovered Luis Ferrierra, 22, hiding in a backyard. He has since been charged with felony assault and robbery--his eighth arrest for 2013.
When asked about the member of the community tossing the rock, one resident responded, "This area is flooded with crack and crime and I think the residents are fed up with it already."
Residents near PS 8 at Mosholu Parkway South and Bainbridge Avenue reported hearing shots during the night of Friday, August 9.. Residents awoke the following morning to discover a bloody park bench. So far the incident remains a mystery.
At just before 11 p.m. on Sunday, August 11, a person was reported shot at E. Gun Hill Road and Decatur Avenue. However, this incident could not be confirmed.
Police say it was a drug dealer who shot a potential customer on August 13, outside of 2685 Valentine Avenue in Bedford Park. The 31-year old victim was shot in the left hand and right thigh and was treated and released from Jacobi Hospital.
That gunman was described as a male wearing a white shirt and blue hat.
On August 15, Yonkers police were apparently in pursuit of a vehicle that crashed as it exited the Major Deegan near the Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course, the armed suspect reportedly fired at least one shot at pursuing officers before making an escape into the woods.
On August 16 three people were shot over the period of two-hours. At 12:15 a.m. a victim was discovered inside of a building at 2725 Webb Avenue. The 19-year old victim had been shot in the hand and leg and was expected to survive.
Residents of the Fordham Manor block that intersects with W. Kingsbridge Road don't even flinch when they hear gunshots anymore. The block has had two other recent shooting's. A 51-year old man was shot in the arm back in April and two men were shot outside of a bodega on July 28.
Police were still looking for the gunman in the July 28 case, described as wearing all red and carrying a black plastic bag.
Forty-five minutes later officer's from the 46th Precinct in Fordham were called to another 24-hour deli at 375 E. 188 Street. The victim in that shooting was transported by a civilian vehicle to Jacobi Hospital and was also recovering.
At just before 2 a.m., a man was wounded outside of 2258 Grand Avenue in University Heights. The 25-year old victim suffered a gunshot to the right leg and was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was treated and released.
EMS reported the transport of a stabbing victim from the intersection of the Grand Concourse and E. 197 Street at just before 10 p.m. on August 17.
At some time after 4 a.m. on Sunday, August 18, a man was shot in the leg outside of 275 E. Gun Hill Road. The unidentified victim was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition. Police were reportedly looking for two male Hispanics who fled the scene.
Recently police did announce an arrest in the May 29 shooting of Alex Rodriguez, who was shot in the head at the intersection of E. 184 Street and Tiebout Avenue in Fordham Heights. Rodriguez died after being taken off life support.
Jamie DeJesus has been charged with manslaughter in the case.
Outspoken Bedford Park resident Ron James Sorenson who was shot as a young man as he drove a livery taxi in the South Bronx back in the late 1960's, recently stated about the judge's recent decision to re-evaluate the NYPD's stop-and-frisk, offering, "None of these people who are against stop-and-frisk have ever been shot. I have and I think the practice saves lives."
Despite the recent surge in killing, NYPD statistics show murder is down over the same time period as last year. So far this year there were 42 homicides in the Bronx, compared with 68 last year.
Community Board # 7 is still in a transition as it's new District Manager Socrates Caba and Chairperson Adaline Walker-Santiago are in the process of taking over the day to day operations of the board. But a blind man can see they have their work cut out for them.
Anyone with any information on any violent crime are asked to call CrimeStoppers at 1 (800) 577-TIPS.

Bronx Week Parade

BRONX, NEW YORK, MAY 16- It may have rained, enough to cancel the Yankee game, but it didn't rain hard enough to damper the spirits enough to cancel the Bronx Week Parade, Food and Music Festival today on Mosholu Parkway.
While some people and a few elected officials stayed away in drier places, there still were over 1,000 proud Bronxites who marched in the Bronx Week Parade on Mosholu Parkway, and then enjoyed the Food and Music Festival. The Parade was co-hosted by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and NY 1 Bronx reporter Dean Meminger.
The Bronx Week Parade started off with the NYPD and NYFD, then came the marchers as the three Bronx Walk of Fame honorees arrived at the viewing stand. Famous actress Ellen Barkin, former NY State Attorney General and Bronx BP Robert Abrams, and musician Miguel Angel Amadeo then went onto the stage to watch the rest of the Bronx Week Parade.
As was the case in last years, parade the theme again this year was all about the children and their future.
Parade highlights - The "Dynamic Duo" of BP Diaz and NY 1 reporter Dean Meminger, The Bronx Young Democrats, The fact that this event started under then Bronx BP Robert Abrams as "Bronx Day", Councilman Joel Rivera's Chief of staff marching four different times in the parade as was noted by BP Diaz, and of course the hundreds of children marching and performing.

What You Should Know

100 PERCENT
By Robert Press

BRONX, NEW YORK, February 23- If you have a computer you should check out my blog at www.100percentbronx.blogspot.com to see the latest edition of “What You Should Know” by State Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz Sr. Like us, Senator Diaz refuses to be shut up, and speaks his mind when it comes to politics.

Diaz Sr. was one of the original “Four Amigos” of New York State Senate fame, and is the only member of the group who was not corrupted by the power that did in the other three Amigos. One big argument Senator Diaz Sr. has is, “What is it the difference what the IDC members are doing from what the Amigos did”. We always appreciate and sometimes if not more often agree with what Senator Diaz Sr. says and you might also when you read his commentary on my blog.

It looks like by the time you read this the school bus drivers strike will be over, and Mayor Incorruptible is taking credit by saying “Special interest groups have never had less influence then now”. We think he means since Ed Koch was mayor. Like Mayor Koch, Mayor Bloomberg is beyond reproach, we just wonder about some in the Bloomberg administration.

Speaking of Mayor Bloomdoom he may just be right on global warming, but why wait to tell us now in his last year of his last term? We hear that in some New York City Housing Authority Houses that the boilers will be moved out of the basement to a higher floor to prevent the flooding of the boilers that occurred during Hurricane Sandy. Also in these NYCHA houses the idea will be to have no tenants living in floors that lie below the flood level. Could Co-op City then be in danger of being flooded out next?

I know I said that I would look into the 15th City Council race this week, but I have to put that off for a few weeks while the picture gets a little clearer. Right now the vibes from the 15th are so bad I am waiting for even more players to be added to the race.

A deep bit of sorrow as Don “The Master Challenger” Masters has left us after suffering through a long illness. You knew your chance to be thrown off the ballot if Don Masters was involved in challenging your petition was very good, and that is why he was called “The Master Challenger”. Even as the legislature made it easier to get on the ballot it was still easy for Masters and his disciples to knock a candidate off the ballot. A fond farewell to Don Masters the king of petition challengers.

Assemblyman Marcos Crespo has passed along information that is on my blog about the state assembly introducing amended legislation that would increase the state minimum wage from $7,25 an hour to $9.00 an hour, and index it to the rate of inflation like President Obama's goal nationwide.

There are also comments by Comptroller John Liu and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. on Mayor Bloomberg's final State of the City Address. Comptroller Liu did not hold back, but I suspect that BP Diaz had to because of the Kingsbridge Armory.
Speaking of BP Diaz I will have a recap of his State of the Borough Speech in next week’s column and on my blog since it is being given after my deadline. I suspect only good things to come from BP Diaz as he boasts of his many accomplishments, and maybe a surprise from him.

Lastly our friends at the Bedford Mosholu Community Association are hosting their Annual Flea Market on Saturday March 9th location to be announced. BMCA will be accepting donations of new & used items “except clothing” at their office located at 400E. Mosholu Parkway (Apt B1) on Wednesday February 20th & 27th from 1:30 – 3:30 PM, on Saturday March 2nd from 1:30 – 4:00 PM, and on Wednesday March 6th from 7:30 – 9:00 PM during their monthly meeting.

100 PERCENT
By Robert Press
BRONX, NEW YORK, February 4- The passing of former outspoken Mayor Ed Koch has left a legacy that 100 percent of those who have commented about his life all agree on, that being that Ed Koch was “Good for New York City”.
His sharpest critics have only words of praise for Koch, even though his legacy as mayor almost came apart in his third term. Koch suffered a stroke in 1987 which was the beginning of his health problems. After the suicide death of his close friend former Queens borough President Donald Manes in 1986, scandals and racial tensions had beset his administration. It was said the FBI had tapes that everyone in the Koch administration was able to be controlled by the mob, with the exception of Ed Koch himself. Racial incidents in Bensonhurst Brooklyn and Howard Beach Queens during his third term as mayor galvanized the vote that was once his biggest support against him causing him to loose a bid for a fourth term. After Koch left City Hall he suffered a heart attack in 1999, and had a case of pneumonia in 2001. Koch had been in and out of hospitals since then and was readmitted last Thursday to the intensive care unit after being released the day before.
Ed Koch who was born on December 12, 1924 in the Bronx, and passed away at 2 a.m. Friday morning February 1st, 2013. He was buried on Monday in a plot he had bought several years ago in a Washington Heights cemetery, because Ed Koch said that he wanted to stay in the city even after he was no longer here.
The candidates who want to replace Lord Bloomberg as mayor have all announced their intentions to run for mayor as Public Advocate Bill deBlasio and Supermarket magnate John Catsimatidis made it official last week with the current New York City Comptroller John Liu as the only one who has not officially announced that he is running for mayor. There may be an attempt to keep a Democrat from becoming mayor as former Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion (who is said to have the Independence Party line for mayor) did not answer the question put to him on NY1's Road to City Hall “If you were to lose the Republican primary would you stay on the ballot on the Independence line only?”. It is speculated that DeBlasio will get the Working Families line, which would leave the Conservative Party line possibly for Catsimatidis or Lhota should either one win the Republican primary for mayor. It was the Independence line that gave Bloomberg the winning margin of victory over Bill Thompson in the 2009 mayors race, and it could be Carrion and the Independence Party that may keep a Democrat from becoming mayor in 2013 again.
At the December 20, 2012 Community Board 9 meeting a resolution was put forth that Francisco Gonzalez be terminated from the position of District Manager of CB9. There was much discussion about the matter at the meeting with DM Gonzalez defending his 19 years as DM of CB9. The vote wound up 15 in favor, 10 against, and 7 abstentions. Even though more CB9 members voted “yes” than “no” the motion did not pass, because an abstention is counted in the total number of votes in which 17 votes of yes were needed for this resolution to pass. After the vote DM Gonzalez stated that CB9 should put this behind them and move forward with the business of the community in a positive matter. For now this matter seems to be over for now, but it could resurface again.
Community Board members are appointed by borough presidents with half the members of each board being proposed by the local council person(s) of the community board area. It is the borough president’s office that gives training to newly appointed members, and every two years members must reapply if they wish to remain on the board not guaranteed of being reappointment. Term limits may be one factor that increases turnover on community boards as new elected officials may want to put on different people to a community board, and take off others that may have been against their election.
It was former Bronx Borough President Carrion who decimated Community Board 4 when the board voted against the new Yankee Stadium proposal that Carrion was pushing. Current Bronx BP Ruben Diaz Jr. has taken much of a hands off approach to the 12 Bronx Community Boards, but with several boards having problems such as CB7 in losing their District Manager who left before the second attempt to get rid of him and here in CB9 Diaz needs to act soon. The 11th, 15th, and16th council districts on January 1st 2014 will have new council members, and in four more years several other current council members will be term limited out of office. It could be that the term limit law may lead to a more often turn over of staff at community boards also as members of the boards also change with the new elected officials.

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. issued the following statement on the passing of Mayor Ed Koch:
BRONX, NEW YORK, February 1- “Today the Bronx is mourning the death of a son and one of the city’s greatest and most charismatic public leaders. Mayor Ed Koch was a man of wit and wisdom, a leader who helped lift our city out of the brink of bankruptcy, raising our spirits along the way and securing New York’s place as the capital of the world.
“Mayor Koch was always proud of his Bronx roots. During his administration he helped rebuild the South Bronx, creating a task force that helped restore burned-out buildings while creating new, thriving communities—work that still resonates to this day. He was a man of deep devotion, who after leaving office continued to inspire New Yorkers through his activism and his commitment to a city he fiercely loved.
“While we mourn his loss we honor his legacy, commitment to civil rights and his civic leadership, which will forever live in our hearts and in the millions of lives he touched. On behalf of the 1.4 million residents of the Bronx, I would like to extend our most heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this very difficult time,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.

Search Continues for Gunman in Double Homicide

By David Greene
BRONX, NEW YORK, January 30- Homicide detectives continue their search for the suspect wanted for the latest killing in the relatively quiet and safe neighborhood of Norwood, after two cousins were found shot to death inside an SUV.
Answering a call of a person shot, police were summoned to a private home at 3328 Perry Avenue at 12:15 a.m., on January 16, when the officers discovered a man and woman had both been shot in the head inside a white SUV.
According to police, the male victim was rushed to Jacobi Hospital and the female victim was removed to St. Barnabas Hospital. Both victims were pronounced dead upon their arrival.
Police would later identify the victims as Jason Rivera, 30, of E. 194 Street and his niece Jennifer Rivera, 20, of Boynton Avenue.
None of the residents spoken to reported hearing gunfire, leading to speculation that the victims were killed at another location and dumped of the relatively quiet Perry Avenue.
Police say Jason Rivera served 4-years in prison after he was
convicted of stabbing a man in 2005. One published report stated that investigators were looking at the older Rivera's criminal background as a possible motive for the killings.
One resident of the block stated, "I didn't hear the gunfire... I've
been here 52-years so something like this is not going to shake me."
Several other violent incidents were reported recently within the
confines of the 52nd Precinct, at just after 5 p.m., on January 10,
police were called to 2608 Creston Avenue, where police discovered a male victim who was shot through the front door of a building.
Police were looking for the gunman, described as a male Hispanic teen, between 14 and 15-years old, who fled from E. 193 Street towards E. Kingsbridge Road.
At just before 6 p.m., on January 13, officers from the 52nd Precinct were called to 3051 Valentine Avenue at E. 204 Street, where they discovered a 30-year old male shot to his side and back.
Police in this incident were said to be looking for a male Hispanic who fled in a Range Rover. On January 14, police were called to 3525 Decatur Avenue, where a victim was discovered with a slash wound to the leg. All three victims were expected to survive. No arrests in any of the incidents were reported.
Longtime Norwood resident Sim Binnum believed the solution rests with Commissioner Ray Kelly, stating, "If we had walking patrols like he has in Manhattan, he could end some of this crap right now. If you go to Fordham you'll see walking patrols. But 204th Street is just as much a commercial district as Fordham or Jerome Avenue."
The 52nd Precinct, which covers the Norwood, Bedford Park and Fordham communities reported just six homicides last year, down from a high of 43 in 1993.
Anyone with any information on any violent crime are asked to call the CRIMESTOPPERS Tip Line at 1 (800) 577-TIPS, all calls remain confidential.

100 PERCENT

By Robert Press
BRONX, NEW YORK, January 25- Our headline was not able to be made into one specific topic, as there is lots to talk about in this column. You can check my blog at www.100percentbronx.blogspot.com for more on what was in this column, what did not make it into the column, and of course the many photos that are posted.
Last week we told you of the swearing in of the two new Bronx State Assembly members, and Assemblyman Luis Supelveda sent out a lengthy summary of what the assembly has done in its first work of the new session. Legislation passed bans assault weapons, closes loopholes and cracks down on the horrific gun violence. Many other provisions of the legislation can be found on my blog archive under the heading “A Response to the Newton CT. School Shootings”, which includes the increased criminal penalties and added requirements for gun ownership.
As for education, the mayor decided to play chicken with the teachers union (UFT) on the subject of teacher evaluations that was a requirement for certain state aid of hundreds of millions of dollars. UFT President Mike Mulgrew said that the UFT and the city reached an agreement before the deadline of last week, but that the mayor had backed out of the deal. Mayor Mike Bloomberg said that the UFT was unreasonable in their demands. The state has already said that the city has lost $240 million in aid for failing to come up with a new teacher evaluation plan, and now has a deadline of February 14th imposed by State Education Commissioner John King or loose even more school aid.
School bus drivers for New York City public schools went on strike last week forcing students who rely on the yellow buses to find alternate means of transportation to get to school. While children were given metro cards that may not help in most cases where the MTA does not service where the child may live. A few years ago all bus routes were changed by the DOE, but someone forgot to let the children and their parents know about it. School bus routes have more than tripled under Mayor Bloomberg going from over 2,000 to 7,700. Children are now bused past each other to schools, and there is no more neighborhood school for the neighborhood children. Neighborhood parents are left in the dark as they may want their children to attend programs offered by their neighborhood school such as a gifted and talented program being offered. It seems that more than half of the neighborhood children who apply to these special programs at their local school are slotted to other schools for the same program, and children are then bused in to fill the program. As we have seen from the strike it is now not unusual for a parent with many school age children to have each child go to a different school.
On the subject of the school bus driver strike, Traffic Enforcement Agents (TEA) have been placed outside of every school in the Bronx, so if you are wondering why you did not get that traffic ticket during arrival or dismissal times the TEA's have gone back to school.
