The Kingsbridge Press

The Riverdale Report

A few weeks ago the Riverdale Press wrote an editorial saying that the new mall that will be constructed on the old Stella Doro cookie factory should not be called “Riverdale Crossing,” but “Kingsbridge Crossing.” We might agree that the location of Broadway and West 238th Street could be called Kingsbridge, but just where does Kingsbridge end and Riverdale begin on Broadway? We don't hear anything about the “Riverdale Diner” which is Located on Kingsbridge Avenue and West 238th Street one block away, being in Kingsbridge and not Riverdale. Nor do we hear anything about the car dealer Riverdale Chrysler, Riverdale Appliance, Riverdale Car Wash, Riverdale Fur, Riverdale Liquor, Riverdale Eye Care, (to name only a few of the businesses) that are located on Broadway, West 230th, or West 231st Street in Kingsbridge but use the Riverdale name instead.
While we are at it, The Riverdale Press publishes a small yearly guide called “Living in Riverdale.” It is said that the guide is to “highlight important events in Riverdale/Kingsbridge history and entertain you with in-depth reporting and fun facts throughout.” The words “Living in Riverdale “ however are on top of each page, and not the words Riverdale/Kingsbridge. The map on page 20 has RIVERDALE in large bold capital letters, while Kingsbridge, Kingsbridge Heights, Van Cortlandt Village, and Marble Hill are in much smaller letters with only the first letter capitalized. We note that all of Kingsbridge Heights is not included as only a small section of Kingsbridge Road is mapped, and the land marked Kingsbridge Armory is left out.
The “Living in Riverdale” guide is very informative, but also misleading when some selected so called local services or institutions are located in Manhattan or the city of Yonkers. So we ask “The Kingsbridge Press” why is the Kingsbridge Armory not called the Kingsbridge Heights Armory where it is located, and why did you leave out this very historical building from your map?
At last Monday's Community Board #8's Land Use Meeting, The New York City Waterfront Revitalization Program was discussed. It appears that the city wants to move the “Coastal Zone Boundary” in the community board from just the waterfront inland to the Henry Hudson Parkway, and include the area of Fieldston. The idea is to incorporate climate control change and sea level rise projections into the planning and design of waterfront development (e.g. Freeboard). Freeboard is increasing a new building's flood resistance by raising the elevation of the lowest floor. It was said that by 2080 due to global warming the sea level could rise as much as 55 inches.
I was able to ask Mayor Bloomberg at an event in the Bronx about the projection of the sea level rising 55 inches by the year 2080. Mayor Bloomberg said that he did not know the exact details, but “We do have to be very much concerned with global warming and the possibility of the rising sea levels”. The mayor then left in a hurry.
